Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacterium, Chlamydia trachomatis. It can infect both men and women and is most commonly spread through unprotected vaginal or anal sex.  Chlamydia is a serious infection that can cause long-term health problems if left untreated. That’s why it’s important to get tested and treated as soon as possible if you think you may have been exposed to the bacteria.

Symptoms of Chlamydia

It is important to be aware of the symptoms of chlamydia so that you can get treatment as soon as possible.

The most common symptom of chlamydia is burning during urination. Other symptoms may include:

  • Discharge from the penis or vagina
  • Painful or swollen testicles
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Bleeding between periods or after sex
  • Pain during sex

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor or healthcare provider so that you can get tested and treated for chlamydia.

Many people don't have symptoms and therefore it is important to get tested to know it for sure.

How Chlamydia Is Passed On

Chlamydia is most commonly passed on through unprotected vaginal or anal sex, or through sharing sex toys that are not washed between uses. It can also be passed on from a mother to her baby during childbirth.

If you have unprotected sex with someone who has chlamydia, it is very likely that you will contract the infection yourself. The best way to protect yourself against chlamydia (and other STDs) is to use condoms every time you have sex. If you are unsure whether your partner has the infection, it is also a good idea to get yourself tested so that you can receive treatment if necessary.

It is also important to remember that chlamydia can be passed on even if there is no penetration during sex – for example, if someone with the infection performs oral sex on their partner without using a condom. Therefore, it is important to always use protection when engaging in any type of sexual activity.

How To Prevent Getting Chlamydia

There are a few simple things you can do to help prevent getting chlamydia:

  • Use condoms during sex. This is the best way to protect yourself from STDs.
  • Limit your number of sexual partners. The more partners you have, the greater your risk of getting an STD.
  • Get tested regularly including chlamydia. If you think you may have been exposed to an STD get tested as soon as possible.

If you are sexually active, it is important to be proactive about protecting your health. By using condoms and limiting your number of sexual partners, you can help reduce your risk of getting chlamydia or any other sexually transmitted disease.

Testing For Chlamydia

The only way to know for sure if you have chlamydia is to get tested. If you think you might have it, or if you have had unprotected sex, it's important to see your doctor or go to a sexual health clinic for a test. Chlamydia tests are quick and easy - they usually involve either a urine sample or a swab of the affected area. The sooner you get tested, the sooner you can get treated if necessary.  Swab tests are uncomfortable only for a few seconds.

Treatment For Chlamydia

The most common antibiotic used to treat chlamydia is azithromycin. Chlamydia can also be treated with doxycycline, erythromycin, levofloxacin, and ofloxacin.

If you have chlamydia, it is important to avoid sexual contact until the infection has been completely cleared. This will help prevent spreading the infection to others. You should also avoid sharing personal items such as towels or razors.

It is important to take all of the medication prescribed to you even if your symptoms go away. Failure to do so could result in the infection becoming resistant to the antibiotic and more difficult to treat.

Complications Of Chlamydia If Left Untreated

Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that is transmitted through sexual contact. If left untreated, chlamydia can cause serious health complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, and ectopic pregnancy.

PID is a serious infection of the reproductive organs that can occur when bacteria from an untreated STD such as chlamydia spreads from the vagina to the uterus and fallopian tubes. PID can cause permanent damage to the reproductive system, making it difficult or impossible to get pregnant later on.

In men, chlamydia can cause inflammation of the testicles and lead to infertility. In women, chlamydia can damage the fallopian tubes and ovaries, resulting in infertility or an increased risk for ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside of the womb).

If you think you may have chlamydia, it’s important to see a doctor right away so you can start treatment and avoid these serious health complications.
