Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that can infect both men and women. It can cause pain and swelling in the genitals, as well as burning when urinating. Gonorrhea is caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which is found in the mucous membranes of the genitals, rectum, mouth, and throat. While gonorrhea is treatable with antibiotics, it has become increasingly resistant to them in recent years. In fact, gonorrhea is now one of the most antibiotic-resistant STDs. This means that it is more important than ever to practice safe sex and get tested regularly if you are sexually active.

Symptoms Of Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease that can cause a number of symptoms. These may include:

  • A burning sensation when urinating
  • An increase in vaginal discharge
  • Painful or swollen testicles
  • Painful intercourse

If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor as soon as possible so that you can be treated. Gonorrhea is a serious infection and can lead to complications if it is not treated promptly.

How Gonorrhea Is Passed On

There are a number of ways that gonorrhea can be passed on from one person to another. The most common way is through unprotected sexual intercourse, whether that be vaginal, anal or oral. It can also be passed on through sharing sex toys with someone who has the infection.

If you think you may have gonorrhea, it’s important to get tested as soon as possible. If you test positive, there are a number of treatment options available. The sooner you start treatment, the less chance there is of passing the infection on to someone else.

Testing For Gonorrhea

There are a few different ways that you can get tested for gonorrhea. You can go to your doctor or a local clinic, or you can order a test kit online.

If you go to your doctor or a local clinic, they will usually take a swab of your throat, anus, or urethra. The swab will then be sent to a lab to be tested for the presence of the gonorrhea bacteria.

If you order a test kit online, you will likely need to provide a urine sample. The kit will come with instructions on how to collect the sample and ship it back to the lab for testing.

The results of your gonorrhea test should be available within a few days. If the test comes back positive, you will need to start treatment right away.

Treatment For Gonorrhea

If you have gonorrhea, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics or gives you a single injection shot to treat the infection. The most common antibiotic used to treat gonorrhea is cephalosporin. This antibiotic is effective in treating gonorrhea, but it cannot be used by people who are allergic to penicillin.

If you are allergic to penicillin, your doctor may prescribe azithromycin (Zithromax) or doxycycline (Doryx). These antibiotics are also effective in treating gonorrhea.

It is important that you take all of the medication prescribed to you to cure your infection. If you do not take the full course of antibiotics, the infection may not be completely cured and you may still be able to spread the disease to others.

You should abstain from sexual activity for 7 days after completing treatment. You should also avoid having sex with anyone who has been treated for gonorrhea within the last 7 days so that you do not become infected again.

How To Prevent Gonorrhea

To prevent gonorrhea, you need to know how it is transmitted. Gonorrhea is spread through sexual contact with an infected person. It can also be spread from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth.

You can reduce your risk of gonorrhea by using condoms during sex and avoiding sex with someone who has the infection. If you are pregnant, get tested for gonorrhea early in your pregnancy so that you can be treated if necessary.

Complications Of Gonorrhea If Left Untreated

If left untreated, gonorrhea can cause a number of serious complications. These include:

Pelvic inflammatory disease: This is a serious infection of the female reproductive organs. It can lead to permanent damage to the fallopian tubes, ovaries and other tissues, and can even cause infertility.

Epididymitis: This is an inflammation of the epididymis, the small tube that carries sperm from the testicle. It can lead to pain and swelling in the testicle and may cause fertility problems.

Joint infection: Gonorrhea can spread to the joints, causing pain, stiffness and swelling. In rare cases, it can even lead to joint destruction.

Heart valve infection: Gonorrhea bacteria can infect the heart valves, leading to a potentially fatal condition called endocarditis.

Spread to other parts of the body: Untreated gonorrhea can spread through the bloodstream to other parts of the body, including the brain (causing meningitis) and liver (causing hepatitis).
